5 Helpful Tips to Keep Your Septic System Running Efficiently

Updated: May 26

Regularly scheduled maintenance on your septic system is the most important aspect when it comes to keeping your system running smoothly. If done correctly, your septic system should last anywhere between 20-30 years. But if you ignore maintenance recommendations, you will find yourself spending much more money in a quicker time frame. Prevent these problems by following these easy 10 steps.

1. Regularly Schedule a Septic System Pump

On average, your septic system should be pumped every 3-5 years. If you don't schedule a regular septic pumping, your solids could overload and cause your septic tank to leach into the drainfields. It's important to keep your drainfields clear of these solids to keep the system running efficiently.

2. Divert All Runoff Away from your Septic Tank

Don't forget to point all gutters and drainpipes away from your septic tank and drain field. This will prevent any runoff from entering into your system. If you allow this to happen, your system could become overloaded and cause it to not work properly.

3. Seal Access Lids and Ports Tightly

Water is notorious for penetrating poorly sealed lids and ports. If water enters the cracks of your septic system, it will cause it to overload and will make your drain-field over-saturated. Your system will be constantly pumping water, causing it to overwork itself and waste your money.

4. Call for Septic System Inspection

It's a good idea to have your septic system tested every year. Unless you have a gravity feed system, because we recommend those are inspected every 3 years. Scheduling a yearly inspection will help diagnose potential problems and give you an option to prevent a problem before it becomes a failure.

5. Only Flush Toilet Tissues

What you flush down the toilet directly impacts your septic system. Limit the use of toilet bowl or drain cleaners because they are also harmful to your septic tank. Keep in mind, most septic systems are not designed to be capable of dealing with undigested solids.
